Downy Woodpecker

The Downy Woodpecker is 6-7 inches and lives in deciduous forests and woodlands. They live in this area year-round and nest in excavated tree cavities. Males have a small red patch on the back of their heads. They eat insects, arthropods, seeds, nuts, fruit, and sap. Make sure you know the difference between the Downy and Hairy Woodpecker. The Downy is smaller and has a much smaller bill.
