Hairy Woodpecker
Scientific: Picoides villosus
Norwegian: Indianerspett
The Hairy Woodpecker is 9-10 inches and has a much longer bill than the smaller Downy Woodpecker. There bills are almost as long as their heads. They live in forests and are a year-round resident on our trails. They nest in excavated tree holes and eat mostly insects. This picture is of male, the female does not have the red spot on the back of the head.
