Least Bittern
Scientific: Ixobrychus exilis
Norwegian: Pygmerørdrum
The Least Bittern is a small heron at only 11-14 inches tall. It is the smallest heron in the Americas. They live in cattails and reeds, and are very secretive. They nest using cattails in large marshes. They eat fish, frogs, crustaceans, and insects. When alarmed, the Least Bittern will freeze in place with its bill pointing straight up, even swaying with the reeds.
No recorded sound.
