Northern Flicker
Scientific: Colaptes auratus
Norwegian: Gullspett
***Did you notice that we mistakenly have the Northern Harrier flying on the Northern Flicker bird sign.
The Northern Flicker is a 11-14 inch woodpecker that is seen mostly in open habitats near trees. They excavate cavity nests in trees, but also will use posts and birdhouses. They reside here year round and eat mainly ants and beetles, which they dig with their slightly curved bill. There are both red-shafted and yellow-shafted Northern Flickers.
