Purple Martin
Scientific: Progne subis
Norwegian: Purpursvale
The Purple Marting is the largest of the swallows around 7-9 inches. They prefer to nest in a Martin house or white gourds. It may take a while to attract residence and many times a recording will be used to attract them to a new Marting house. They reside here in the summer and eat flying insects, mostly dragonflies, which they snap up via aerial maneuvers. An adult male is pictured with a juvenile in the below photo.
